Setting up trellis netting for cucumbers, yard-long beans and melons

Trellis netting lets climbing crops grow upwards: it saves space, keeps fruit off the soil and makes harvesting easier.

Why use a trellis net

  • Crops climb upwards, so you can grow more in the same space.
  • Leaves and fruit stay off the ground and air moves freely, which helps reduce disease and rot.
  • Cucumbers hang straight down, grow well-shaped and are easier to spray and pick.

What you need

  • 4 inch (100 mm) plant support netting, in a width that matches the height you want
  • Bamboo, wooden or steel posts for both ends of each row and along it
  • Wire or rope for the top and bottom lines, and cable ties or light cord for tying

Putting up a vertical trellis

  1. Set the end posts firmly and brace them: they take most of the pull.
  2. Add intermediate posts about every 2–2.5 m along the row.
  3. Run a taut top wire between the end posts, about 1.8–2 m high depending on the crop.
  4. Hang the net from the top wire, tying it every 30–50 cm, and tie it to every post.
  5. Pull the bottom edge down to a lower wire or ground pegs so the whole net is evenly taut. A slack net sags once the crop is fully grown.
  6. Train the vines into the net at first. After that, the tendrils climb by themselves.

Flat netting for flowers

For flowers such as chrysanthemums, stretch the net level above the bed. The stems grow up through the openings and stay upright. Raise the net as the plants grow, or add a second layer.

After the harvest

Strip off the vines and plant debris, roll up the net and store it in the shade. A well-stored net can be used again. Our plant support netting has an estimated service life of about 2 years.

The service life of plastic products depends on sunlight, temperature, humidity, chemicals and installation. Any figure is an estimate from typical use, not a guarantee.

Available sizes
